“Mio zio lavorava in Francia” mi fa Mimì Coia, un anziano impettito signore, “conosceva Moulin e quando seppe che sarebbe venuto a Villa Medici per un lungo periodo, grazie alla borsa di studio vinta per i suoi meriti artistici, gli disse di fare un salto a Castelnuovo a trovare il fratello che qui in piazza aveva una rivendita di vino e generi diversi. Mio padre se lo vide arrivare a piedi un pomeriggio con una gran barba lunga e folta, addosso un vestito dimesso ed ai piedi le ciocie. Pensando che fosse un vagabondo in cerca di elemosina, o al massimo uno zampognaro di passaggio lo invitò a bere un bicchiere di vino. Il pittore gli rispose con un sorriso e con un italiano misto ad accento francese: “Tu sei Giovanni Coia, vero? Io sono Charles Moulin!”. Al mio papà per poco non gli veniva un colpo: il fratello gli aveva anticipato in una lettera l’arrivo di un “gran professore”, ma non certo così conciato!  

Era persona colta, saggia, paziente, disponibile. Tra l’altro, aveva studiato presso l’Orto botanico di Parigi l’uso delle erbe medicinali
e curò gratuitamente tanta gente, beccandosi una denuncia
da parte del medico locale: nessuno andava più da lui!

 

 

“Il mio metodo è di trovare la composizione che meglio permette di chiarire il sentimento di ogni soggetto; l’ora si intende come luce: passata l’ora, è passato l’incanto… Non cerco mai la stranezza nell’originalità: faccio e agisco solo secondo coscienza. Ho potuto conservare la mia libertà e non mi è costato. Ho sempre sentito di non poter diventare ricco e di non veder chiaro nei miei problemi di pittura che in solitudine e molto tardi: adesso comincio a capire il perché delle cose.

 

Se il fine della vita è l’aspirazione alla felicità, l’Arte deve, in misura dei suoi mezzi, contribuire a questo fine, seminando serena commozione e splendore di bellezza… Il principio ed il dovere dell’artista è di essere l’archetto del violino delle anime e di farle vibrare: è d’essere un germe di felicità.

 

La felicità della pittura moderna invece, consiste proprio nel non riuscire a scoprire nessun perché: essa è piena d’inquietudine e incertezze, è una pittura da sbandati, che rispecchia il male del secolo, dell’uomo moderno che cerca di salire sulle proprie spalle per non essere schiacciato nel vuoto che ha nel cuore…”.

 

“I Castelnuovesi sono buoni e generosi perché hanno il sole; quando il sole riscalda l’uomo non ha bisogno di lottare: la natura non dà mai cattivi consigli”.

 

“Qui non vi è altro che l’opera della natura selvaggia e incontaminata! E’ tutto grandezza e magnificenza!…” A chi gli chiedeva se avesse mai visto l’orso, rispondeva: “Ma certo! Ogni mattina quando mi guardavo in uno specchio rotto…”. Era un convinto assertore della filosofia di Jean-Jacques Rousseau da lui tradotta in vita pratica: la civiltà, origine dei mali e le infelicità dell’uomo; la natura, invece, depositaria delle qualità positive… Un’esistenza da condurre in totale simbiosi con la natura stessa; per sentirsi parte viva di essa con animo genuinamente primitivo, con lo stupore autentico di un bambino che conserva ancora il suo spontaneo incanto.

 

“Non si deve rompere l’equilibrio con la natura, ma lasciare il mondo così come è stato creato… Il progresso porterà al regresso, alla corruzione, all’autodistruzione dell’uomo. Ma il mondo non finirà: esso si trasformerà in caos, ma nel caos ci sarà sempre la vita
e tutto risorgerà…  E poi, allo scadere del ciclo – ci saranno altri cicli,
di milioni, miliardi di anni – di nuovo e ancora il caos…” 

 

“Non è per virtù mia che mi vengono le idee… è una forza, un’energia superiore che me lo manda: il mio Dio? La bellezza, la natura, l’arte, l’intelligenza… Un Creatore che chiamano Dio, Allah, Geova e altri nomi ancora… Vivere secondo i principi morali della religione, di qualsiasi religione, è per me vivere secondo natura, nel rispetto di tutte le creature, nell’accontentarmi di quanto mi è stato dato, nell’accettare la vita com’è…”

 

21 Aprile 1960: una suora lo assisteva già da tempo per le cure necessarie. Ormai novantunenne, allettato e nonostante gli acciacchi, volle ritrarla… D’un tratto, la mano scivolò sul foglio, inerte…….  Se ne andò via così Moulin, proprio quando la luce con le sue sfumature, si risveglia dal lungo sonno invernale: sì, se ne andò così… il primo giorno di primavera…

 

 

 

“La donna è una creatura sublime, soggetto d’arte: io avrei dovuto scegliere o l’una
o l’altra e ho scelto l’altra; nessuna avrebbe mai potuto capire fino in fondo la mia vita
e sarebbe stato ingiusto da parte mia imporgliela. Lega tra loro due uccelli: avranno insieme quattro ali, ma non potranno mai volare…”.
