‘misteriosa’ villa extraurbana rinvenuta nel 1963, oltre 50 anni fa, per puro caso, nel corso di lavori infrastrutturali. 
E’ completamente lontana dagli itinerari turistici, Casignana, neanche mille abitanti, e la sua collocazione evoca echi inquietanti. Si trova, infatti, nella Locride, in provincia di Reggio Calabria. Un nome spesso ricorso nella cronaca nera, che richiama alla memoria faide senza fine e un sistema malavitoso pervasivo. 
Sotto il profilo amministrativo, al momento, tutto è congelato e i Commissari prefettizi gestiscono l’ordinaria amministrazione, ovvero non si possono avviare iniziative atte a valorizzare questo prezioso tesoro cittadino, azione promozionale e culturale per cui da anni si batte l’on. I mosaici ubicati in località Palazzi di Casignana, molto vicina al Mar Ionio fanno parte di una 

un tesoro preziosissimo, i cui mosaici gareggiano in bellezza, raffinatezza, straordinaria qualità artistica con quelli di Piazza Armerina e di Pompei.

E’ dello scorso 31 luglio, infatti, la delibera del Consiglio dei Ministri di prorogare lo scioglimento del Consiglio comunale di Casignana, per infiltrazioni della ‘ndrangheta. Inizialmente, il provvedimento era stato emanato il 18 aprile 2013. Una realtà sociale e amministrativa bloccata dalla situazione dell’ordine pubblico così degradato, pur avendo splendide prospettive per il tesoro archeologico che custodisce nel suo territorio, qualora se ne sapesse indirizzare bene il marketing territoriale presso le grandi agenzie di viaggio ed i siti turistici…
Ma torniamo al bello che i nostri avi seppero costruire (magari altrettanto ‘inquietanti’ di quelli di oggi nei loro vertici, ed altrettanto avidi, la storia ce lo insegna, ma con l’orgoglio di lasciare un segno alla posterità) e che noi, loro eredi, stupidamente vandalizziamo. 
Ci sono voluti 36 anni affinché, da quei casuali ritrovamenti in Contrada Palazzi, da parte delle maestranze della Cassa per il Mezzogiorno, impegnate nella posa di un acquedotto, il sito di 15 ettari fosse oggetto di una serie di campagne di scavo che ci hanno restituito

Al disvelamento di quest’opera, la Regione, inserendola nei Fondi europei, ha previsto un finanziamento di 2,5 milioni di euro, cifra che, in un paese normale, basterebbe senz’altro a recuperare un simile tesoro.

L’assoluto isolamento della Calabria dalle rotte di un turismo non stagionalizzato, che non sia quello estivo, balneare, è la dimostrazione che, accanto alle cattedrali nel deserto industriali, esistono quelle culturali, archeologiche, straordinarie eredità di cui sembra non sappiamo cosa farcene. 
Gli stessi Bronzi di Riace che, al loro ritrovamento e nei primi tempi di esposizione, suscitarono clamore e file di turisti, ora sono stati restituiti al Museo da cui provenivano, sottoposto a lunghi restauri, ma a lungo sono stati un ammennicolo del Palazzo della Regione. 
Arrivare a Casignana è difficile. Ma soprattutto è difficile un’opera di marketing territoriale che tenga conto degli svantaggi competitivi dell’area. Manca persino un punto di partenza, ovvero un’amministrazione comunale in carica. Quei 2,5 milioni di euro al momento affidati al SUAP (Sportello Unico Attività Produttive) per realizzarne l’appalto servirebbero per continuare a scavare oltre gli 8mila mq già svelati;

per capire che ci fa un tesoro proprio lì; e di chi fosse quella villa, sorta in un pizzo di mondo piuttosto incongruo nella logica territoriale dell’antica Roma,

anche se si ritiene che essa sia sorta lungo la strada che collegava Locri Epizefiri e Rhegion (l’antica Reggio Calabria); ed è l’unico reperto romano in un mondo magno-greco.
L’attuale parco si compone di oltre 20 ambienti, con un cortile centrale, su cui si affacciano le terme, un giardino ove era collocata una fontana monumentale; i servizi; la zona residenziale vera e propria.
Le terme replicano quelle presenti nell’antica Roma: hanno i loro frigidarium, tepidarium e calidarium. Accanto a quest’ultimo, c’è il laconicum, dove c’erano le saune (essudationes), dove il riscaldamento si realizzava attraverso i praefurnia (bocche da forno, collocati sotto il lastricato. Tutto questo sistema si è conservato fino ai giorni nostri ed è visibile ancor oggi.

Le vestigia più pregevoli sono rappresentate dalle pavimentazioni musive. Importantissima è quella della ‘sala delle Nereidi’,

dove, con tessere bianche e verdi viene rappresentato un thiasos marino da cui emergono quattro Nereidi (Ninfe marine), ognuna in groppa ad un animale simbolico: un leone, un cavallo, un toro ed una tigre.
Nella sala d’ingresso a Sud, è emersa l’immagine di un volto femminile, composta a tessere in colori vivacissimi e circondata da girali vegetali. 
Lascia sbalordita la bellezza della Sala delle Quattro Stagioni, ovvero la sala triclinare; ed è in corso di scavo l’anfiteatro. E’ stato altresì rivelato un altro pavimento, con un Bacco ebbro sorretto da un giovane Satiro, che versa vino da un’anfora. Non finisce qui. Vari avvistamenti casuali fanno ipotizzare che proprio lì davanti ci siano reperti in mare altrettanto preziosi. 
C’è anche la vecchia storia della Sfinge, di sofisticata fattura, ritrovata dallo scrittore Axel Munthe, capitato per caso proprio in questo luogo ed ora installata a Capri, a Villa San Michele. Non sarebbe il caso che tornasse a casa?
