BURRI              A GIBELLINA  IN CONTROLUCE

 

Una che ci vuole raccontare un Burri in controluce, un Burri dietro le luci accecanti che hanno illuminato le espressioni della sua arte. Un Burri vicino di casa, un Burri che siede alla stessa vostra tavola. Un Burri che vi prende per mano e vi spiega non la sua opera – perché quella lui non ha mai voluto spiegarla – ma vi spiega se stesso.

Eh già! Io Burri non l’ho conosciuto di persona, non l’ho conosciuto 

in carne ed ossa. Ma è un personaggio 

che mi ha sempre affascinato.


Ho cominciato piano piano ad avvicinare le persone che lo avevano incontrato, dapprima quelle ufficiali, poi gli amici, quelli delle partite di calcio, quelli degli appostamenti per la caccia. 

 

Al mio lavoro però mancava ancora un tassello, che per una donna è essenziale: mancava di parlare con chi aveva trascorso con lui le sere, con chi aveva condiviso gli attimi che rendono due esseri fusi in un solo pensiero. La moglie, l’enigmatica, l’estrosa Minsa, era morta. Altri con cui avevo parlato erano elusivi su questo tema. Finalmente un incontro ha da dato una svolta alle mie ricerche e, condotta per mano da una donna – anche lei grande artista, ho scoperto anche il cuore di Burri.

Pian piano mi si è ricomposto un mosaico; e credo di aver vissuto 

con la sua ombra, calpestato i suoi terreni, respirato la sua aria, 

addirittura mangiato ciò che mangiava lui: in una parola 

è come se avessi vissuto per sei mesi con la sua anima.


Ho cercato di raccontare “L’Umbrietà” di Burri, i suoi neri ed oro rispecchiavano i colori del rinascimento, le sue tele stracciate, l’estrema povertà della nostra terra, i territori aspri e difficili dell’alta valle del Tevere. Così, anche nel raccontare la sua presenza a Gibellina, ho voluto dare una immagine inusuale, convinta che la nostra Umbria, che pure è squassata continuamente dai terremoti, lo avesse segnato nelle sue decisioni.

Il più grande capolavoro europeo di land art poteva nascere solo 

da quella caparbietà che confronta l’uomo 

con la natura distruttrice.


Nel mio capitolo su Gibellina, estratto dal volume Controluce. Alberto Burri. Una vita da artista, edito da Donzelli, ho cercato di mostrare il momento in cui Alberto decide di occuparsi del territorio terremotato.

 

“Arrivai a Gibellina, alla nuova Gibellina, quella ricostruita a venti chilometri dal luogo della distruzione, nel primo pomeriggio, accolto dalla stella di Consagra. Una porta d`acciaio attraverso cui si intravedeva un cielo striato: la scultura sembrava impedire anche alle nuvole rosate di entrare in città. Diane aveva tanto insistito, Corrao mi chiamava quasi ogni giorno, ho dovuto accettare di andare almeno a fare un sopraluogo. Per fortuna c`era lei, Giovanna, l`unica in grado di capire l’angoscia che mi provocava quella desolazione: mi ricordava la guerra e la disperazione del dopoguerra. Ma lei con il suo sorriso, con le sue parole mi incoraggiava. 

 

Ero lì, seduto nella hall dell`albergo, incapace di muovermi, ma lei mi prese per mano, mi fissò negli occhi: «Pensa alla ricostruzione, a ciò che puoi fare per questa povera gente.» In quel mentre entrò Diane: «Andiamo, Zanmatti vuol farci fare un giro.» Vagammo per la città piena di cantieri. Ci fermammo nel portico del comune. Avevano voluto rappresentare la città ideale, e le ceramiche della Attardi richiamavano un colore rinascimentale, ma c`era qualcosa di discordante come un bellissimo pezzo musicale dove qualcuno stonava. Camminavamo in un immenso museo all`aperto, fuori dal tempo, vivo, ma la città… dov’era la città? 

 

Poi entrammo nella Chiesa di Quaroni. Mentre gli altri discutevano sulle rotondità della palla, io cercavo Dio in quel luogo, ma avevo l`impressione che se ne fosse tenuto lontano. L`avvolgersi su se stesso di quella palla non aveva nulla dello slancio verso il cielo dei miei campanili umbri. Diane cominciò a parlare con Giovanna: il gorgoglio delle parole rintronava nelle mie orecchie, uscii di scatto da quella chiesa alla ricerca di qualcosa di diverso. 

 

A cena dissi: «Basta andiamocene io non potrò mai intervenire in questo guazzabuglio, perché mi avete portato qui? Diane domattina ripartiamo.» Uscii infuriato, e Giovanna mi seguì mi prese per mano e cercò di calmarmi. Udimmo un leggero scampanellare e in fondo, di fronte alla montagna di sale di Paladino, da cui i cavalli spezzati cercavano invano di uscire, vidi passare un carretto siciliano luminoso nei suoi colori, tirato da un cavallo bardato a festa che faceva dondolare i campanellini dalle sue orecchie. Dietro di lui una processione di gente che cantava litanie, invocava la vergine e si dirigeva verso i luoghi della vecchia Gibellina, i luoghi spazzati via dal terremoto. Ci unimmo a loro, Giovanna stringeva sempre più forte la mia mano: in quel momento capii cosa volevo fare.

Gli occhi di quella gente che riflettevano il bisogno disperato di tornare 

alla loro Gibellina, che ormai era solo nei loro sogni mi aveva fatto venire un`idea. La mia opera avrebbe dovuto sorgere dove il terremoto aveva colpito, dalla rovina sarebbe sorto il simbolo della speranza, del futuro, di tutto ciò 

che sarebbe potuto accadere un giorno qui.


La mattina dopo mi diressi velocemente all`ufficio del sindaco: «Ho deciso, interverrò». Corrao tirò un sospiro di sollievo. Continuai: «Perimetreremo tutta la zona terremotata, la ricopriremo di cemento bianco lasciando emergere le vecchie vie. Farò in modo che dalle superfici bianche emergano i cretti.» Corrao impallidì: «L`idea è splendida, ma un`opera così colossale non posso affrontarla con le risorse modeste che mi sono state affidate.» Intervenne il mio angelo custode Diane: aprì una sottoscrizione internazionale, sollecitò gli emigrati denarosi: da tutto il mondo arrivarono i fondi. I lavori iniziarono alla fine del 1984 e continuarono per cinque anni.”

Dopo le importanti celebrazioni del grande artista Alberto Burri mi potrete chiedere cosa ci viene a dire una che Burri non lo ha conosciuto di persona.
